Walking through Kato Pafos

Discover Paphos – A Walk Through History

For six centuries, Paphos was the capital of Cyprus, and today it is almost like an open-air museum. The city’s cultural heritage is so remarkable that all of Paphos has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The walking tour begins in front of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation office in Kato Paphos and takes you through the city’s main holiday centre.

Stroll along the coastal promenade, visit the small harbour, and explore the medieval castle, a testament to Cyprus’ turbulent history. Today, the castle provides a stunning backdrop for the annual summer opera festival.

The route continues to the archaeological park, where you can admire exquisite Roman-era floor mosaics, considered among the finest in the eastern Mediterranean.

Next, cross the busy St Paul’s Avenue to reach the site known as the “Pillory of Saint Paul”, where tradition holds that the apostle was chained and flogged before converting the Roman governor to Christianity.

Along the same street is the Agia Solomoni Catacombs Church, believed to have once been the synagogue of Roman Paphos. Visitors often tie handkerchiefs to the branches of a large mastic tree as offerings.

Not far from here are the rock-cut Tombs of the Kings, decorated with Doric columns and impressively grand. On the way back, you can visit the aquarium and enjoy a welcome rest.
